About Harper
Young rider phenom Harper Padgett may only be 16 years old, but she’s already established herself as one of equestrian sport’s rising stars. Harper’s mother Leonie Padgett grew up eventing in New Zealand, so when Harper started showing interest in riding at the age of five, an eventing barn was the natural first choice. After spending some time learning the ropes of the sport, 12-year-old Harper teamed up with her mom’s horse, Captivate. The two quickly moved up the levels, competing in her first CCI2* competition when Harper was only 13. The experience she’s gained with Captivate so early in her career has been instrumental in Harper's development as a top young rider.
Over the past four years, Harper has had the privilege of training under the guidance of renowned eventing coach and Olympian Phillip Dutton. Winters spent based at Phillip’s farm in Wellington, Florida, have not only allowed her to refine her eventing expertise but have also provided her with the opportunity to compete in show jumping at the prestigious Winter Equestrian Festival. This diverse
experience has allowed Harper to hone her skills in the show ring and focus on improving the quality of her education over fences. At just 13, Harper was selected for the USEA’s EA21 National Camp, an honor she has maintained for the past three years. Working with the esteemed David O'Connor has been particularly enlightening for Harper, providing her with invaluable insights and mentorship that have significantly shaped her approach to training and competition. In 2023, Harper showcased her skills at the North American Youth Championships (NAYC), where she
earned an individual bronze medal and team gold with the CC1* star team and team silver with the CCI2* team. She went on to place 5th at her first CCI3* event at Aspen Farms, solidifying her reputation as a top talent for the future. In addition to Captivate, Harper has a promising young horse by the name of Cooley Starship, who she credits with helping her learn how to ride a greener, hotter, and more sensitive horse. Looking forward, Harper aims to continue her journey in both show jumping and long-format events with her horses and plans to compete at Bouckart Farms and Terra Nova in 2025 at the CCI3* level.
